While fashion week season draws to a close internationally, the Indian fashion fraternity gets its gears in motion around March. As soon as summer hits the city, the best of the best come out to play at India’s beloved Lakmé Fashion Week. This season, which marked 15 years of the event, was no different. All of B-town and the who’s who of fashion insiders were seen soaking up the sartorial excellence displayed at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015 (read: 17th – 22nd March).

Obviously, we kept our sights glued to the runway to get our daily dose of wow. Gaurang Shah, Payal Singhal, SVA by Sonam and Paras Modi, Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Anushree Reddy and Suneet Varma were among some of our favorite shows. After the curtain fell on Anamika Khanna’s brilliant grand finale on Sunday, we got down to the business of decoding the best desi looks from the fabulous week (yes, you can thank us later!). Here goes…

Best Sarees

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Shivan and Narresh

Resort wear kings, Shivan and Narresh’s famous saree-kini made an appearance in this collection too, only this time, the colour inspiration came from French artist Henri Rousseau’s botanical paintings.

Payal Singhal‘s royal golden drapes with a touch of pastels sure made our hearts stop and Sva’s selection of sarees (the entire collection was inspired by Istanbul) were teamed with chic peplum blouses. Sabyasachi’s collection was a throwback to the ’70s and he went the retro route with his saris.

Gaurang Shah‘s sarees took a page from Hindu mythology depicting the marvels of nature on his prints and Anavila‘s contemporary take on the traditional saree was displayed on a range of interesting fabrics.

The clean, white Mulmul collection curated by Harper’s Bazaar boasted of sleek pieces in soft feminine silhouettes, enhanced with glass and various houndstooth patterns. Kiran Uttam Ghosh made a comeback with her signature pleats and flowing silhouettes.

As always, one can trust Anamika Khanna to give the sari contemporary relevance. This time, she did it by teaming the drape with pants.

Best Lehengas

L to R: Anushree Reddy and Payal Singhal

L to R: Anushree Reddy and Payal Singhal

If you have a summer wedding to attend this year, get excited, because Anushree Reddy and Payal Singhal have you covered! The former’s collection was feminine fervour at its best — replete with lots of florals, candy colours and free-flowing silhouettes. Singhal, on the other hand, focused on fuss-free and flirty lehengas, perfect for those who run away from an overdose of bling.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Patine and Arpita Mehta

Patine brought back the ease and allure of the 1970s with the blend of Victorian lace and Indian embroidery while Arpita Mehta‘s collection was truly ‘A Royal Summer Affair’ with an overload of bright, feminine shades.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Suneet Varma

Suneet Varma‘s lehengas were luxury personified, displaying an indulgence of precious finery.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Manish Malhotra

Bollywood sweetheart Manish Malhotra sent out his ‘Blue’ collection down the runway, which left everyone feeling anything but! The intricate floral lehengas came with an interesting twist – off shoulder blouses, fringe detailing and embroidered jackets — what’s not to love?

Best Salwars

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Ridhi Mehra and Anamika Khanna

Ridhi Mehra’s soft romantic shades and oriental craftsmanship from the Mughal era added extra pizzazz to her salwars. We loved the dhoti salwars paired with crop tops and sheer capes! The draped salwars at Anamika Khanna in neutrals like ivory and gunmetal made a huge statement without trying too hard.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Payal Singhal and Divya Sheth

Divya Sheth displayed flower power with a hint of rustic elegance (flowy jacket-style kurtas for the win!) whereas Payal Singhal impressed us with her innovative salwars that came with slits in ethnic and tribal prints.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Divya Sheth and Surendri

Arpita Mehta and Surendri sent out fun, flirty salwars in net. The former veered more towards bubbly and youthful shades, while the latter flaunted vibrant hues and prints inspired by the parrot.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Arpita Mehta

Best Bridalwear

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Manish Malhotra and Suneet Varma

Suneet Varma’s collection was aimed at the bride who wishes to shine bright like a diamond. His use of bold hues like red and royal blue with a touch of metallic and mirror-work quickly made it to the top of our lust list.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Suneet Varma

Manish Malhotra displayed a variety of silhouettes – from asymmetrical hemlines to high-low blouses and offbeat blouses – apt for all those pre-wedding functions.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Sabyasachi and Soumitra Mondal

Sabyasachi brought back Disco fever for the upbeat, new-age bride with a generous helping of sequins while Soumitra Mondal presented a contemporary yet royal look, blending tradition and heritage with modern styles.

Best blouses

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

Manish Malhotra

The fringe blouses by Manish Malhotra were undisputed winners and right on trend too.

lakme fashion week summer resort 2015

L to R: Frou Frou and Mandira Bedi

Mandira Bedi’s choli blouses in vibrant colours were the picture of unabashed sexiness. Frou Frou’s subtle, powdery hued blouses came with interesting sleeves while Arpita Mehta unleashed her cape style blouses in delicate, sheer fabrics. And finally, Anamika Khanna closed the week with her intricately embroidered, stunning blouses in varied necklines teamed with signature jackets, officially getting us in the mood for summer!

AIFW finale

The bells of change — ushering out the dated and welcoming the fresh — were at the core of the recently held Autumn/Winter 15 Fashion Week in Delhi. Amazon was roped in as the title sponsor in what was seen as a huge nod to the ever growing online fashion community in India. But AIFW wasn’t ready to simply rest on the brilliant collections that most designers showed. FDCI also pulled off a coup of sorts with the finale show — 25 superstars of Indian fashion came together to contribute two looks each to a 50-piece finale collection dedicated to the crafts of India. Safe to say, we couldn’t get enough of it!

So if you have umpteen winter weddings to attend, we are here to make your life (well, at least your wardrobe!) easier with a quick roundup of the season’s best desi looks!

Best Salwars

AIFW

L to R: Anamika Khanna and Rohit Bal

Anamika Khanna had our heart with a masterfully draped look — dhoti pants teamed with a choli (blouse) and signature jacket — but this time in a vibrant burst of colors. Rohit Bal’s crushed floor length anarkali paired with a koti and statement dupatta in a deep shade of brick red had effortless drama written all over it.

AIFW

Ashima Leena

Designer duo Ashima-Leena chose eye-popping shades to highlight the bonhomie of a free-spirited gypset, while veteran JJ Valaya stuck to neutrals for a spot of some understated glam with his nomadic Russian themed showcase .

AIFW

JJ Valaya

We absolutely loved pretty much every look from Prama by Pratima Pandey — a collection inspired by Sleeping Beauty with a particular emphasis on breathable fabrics, floral embroidery, artful signature layering and lust worthy salwars.

AIFW

Parma by Pratima Pandey

Best sarees

nikasha and virtue

L to R: Nikasha and Virtue by Viral, Ashish & Vikrant

It’s no secret that we nurse a soft spot for Nikasha and her vibrant design sensibilities. Her AW ’15 collection ‘Ruby’ was no exception. The bold saris are sure to bring some much needed colour to dull winter days with its vivid hues, offbeat blouses and oriental feel. This clashing print sari by Virtue by Viral, Ashish & Vikrant made us sit up and take notice of its careful tailoring and winning interplay of textures. The slim belt was just the finishing flourish it needed.

amalraj sengupta

Amalraj Sengupta

Another sari that stood out was a hand spun number Amalraj Sengupta. It caught the eye without trying too hard and the jacket blouse sealed the deal.

Best Blouses

AIFW

L to R: Nikasha and Mynah Designs

Nikasha pulled out all aces with this collection and her blouses had a lot to do with it! The delicate zardosi work and camisole peplum silhouette of this particular blouse is sure to elevate a same ‘ol sari. Mynah Designs, on the other hand, played with a black crop top style blouse with strategic sheer panels for some peek-a-boo fun.

AIFW

L to R: Payal Singhal Tanvi Kedia

Tanvi Kedia’s colourful high-necked blouse was a crafty creation whereas delicate Parisian romance reigned supreme at Payal Singhal.

AIFW

Samant Chauhan

Samant Chauhan’s collection largely stayed within the gold and cream territory, making things interesting with avant garde cuts and shapes. How can this fringed cape blouse not be on one’s lust list?!

Best Lehengas

AIFW

L to R: Ritu Kumar and Anupama Dayal

Ritu Kumar proved again that she can’t go wrong with classic Indian wear and this lehenga from the finale show is sure to brighten up any festivity. Equal parts bohemian and chic, this unique Anupama Dayal lehenga is inspired by her muse Nur Jahan and boasts of an inimitable eclectic vibe.

AIFW

L to R: Payal Singhal and Sabyasachi

Payal Singhal’s heavily appliquéd tulle and organza creation has trousseau-ready written all over it while there’s no going wrong with Sabysachi’s tribute to India’s rich heritage with an embellished lehenga and jacket blouse. Brownie points for weaving marsala, Pantone’s color of 2015, into his looks.

AIFW

L to R: Varun Bahl and Anju Modi

Anju Modi turned her attention to the new-age princess with an upbeat collection that married the layering she is so famous for with a whimsical spin, happy colours and a younger overall vibe. Varun Bahl turned to the trusty combination of ivory, red and lots of shimmer — we bet many brides will be scrambling to sport these looks at their upcoming nuptials!

Luxemi Talks to Designer Anushree Reddy

Think vintage charm, flower power, feminine frills and pretty perfection and designer Anushree Reddy instantly comes to mind. The newest ‘IT’ designer, known for her use of vivid colors, attention to detailing, and princess-like Indian wear, has quickly soared through the popularity charts and is definitely on top.

Anushree Reddy interview

From an avid shopper to a sought-after designer, Anushree has come a long way indeed. Fashion designing, it turns out, wasn’t this Hyderabad native’s Plan A. Armed with a degree from the London School of Economics, she was happy just filling her closet with beautiful designer wear, until her stint as a fashion editor with a Hyderabad-based lifestyle magazine made her rethink her career path. Hence the self-taught designer’s label took shape in 2010, she made her Lakme Fashion Week debut in 2013, and the rest, as they say, is history!

Your SS ’15 collection is all about candy colours and feminine frills. Tell us about your inspiration for the same.

Anushree Reddy interview

For ‘The Royal Courtyard’, I took inspiration from the home of Nizams, where ethereal begums redefined grandeur. Each design from this collection is soaked in nostalgia and each piece holds a piece of history within it. Prints, of course, featured prominently and I brought zardozi embellishments to the fore, as it is part and parcel of being a Hyderabadi! Traditional yet contemporary and royal, this collection has an overall Nizami influence and has been created by the most skilled karigars from the city.

Who is the quintessential Anushree Reddy woman?

Anushree Reddy interview

She is someone who is independent, fun and willing to break away from monotony and try something fun like printed lehengas with quirky embellished blouses! She is someone who favours minimal styling — a great pair of earrings is all she needs! Envision someone who swears by vintage updos and fishtail braids. All in all, she is a girl someone who is always heading out to make a statement!

Tell us a bit about your personal style.

My look is subtle and understated with a nod to comfort. My favourite designer is Anamika Khanna, I recently picked up a dhoti saree from her for a wedding and am absolutely in love with it! And of course, there is nothing like a Chanel bag, it’s such a trans-seasonal classic piece.

What are the top Indian wear must-haves this summer?

A crop top and high-waisted skirt is all you need for an Indian summer wedding!

Anushree Reddy interview

What would you suggest one wear to a:

Mehendi: Dhoti pants and a kurta in shades of yellow and green.

Sangeet: A gold or champagne colored outfit, be it a lehenga or sari. The fabric itself should be self shimmer. This makes for a fun yet elegant look.

Reception: Go all red-carpet ready in a glamorous gown or a chic sari.

Cocktail party: A pastel sequinned gown should do the trick.

Who are your favourite celebrity stylistas and why?

Deepika in Anushree Reddy

Deepika Padukone has always been my favorite. I have really started to warm up to Kangana Ranaut’s style and I would love to see Aishwarya Rai Bachan in my label.

A piece of style advise that never fails?

Always dress according to your body type!

The New-Age Lehenga

The new lehenga

There’s a new lehenga in town and it’s one you are going to love! Gone are the days when we gals had to lug around heavy crystal encrusted lehengas that weighed a ton. As Indian fashion becomes increasingly concerned with comfort, an easy flowing maxi skirt coupled with a trendy crop top has quickly emerged as the lehenga’s present-day counterpart. For those of you who love to mix and match, get ready to celebrate because this cool new go-to is all about versatility and fun. With Sabyasachi on board as evidenced by this Lakme Fashion Week Spring-Summer ’15 collection, it’s safe to say that this combination is here to stay. We snooped and rounded up the best of the trend. Twirling was never simpler, just leave those dupattas behind…or maybe not!

Anushree Reddy: Aqua Splash

The new lehenga

Known for her fresh color palette and penchant for all things girly, Anushree Reddy’s LFW showcase had blockbuster songstress Kanika Kapoor looking pretty as a picture in her mint skirt and floral crop top with cut outs! The knot detailing on the skirt really uplifts this look.

Payal Singhal: Shimmer and Shine

The new lehenga

Payal Singhal’s AIFW AW ’15 showcase married vintage French romance with easy silhouettes. This cream net skirt paired with a Chantilly lace crop top can easily transition from day to night with the right accessories. Extra props for the bare shoulders and pastel hue!

Arpita Mehta: Bohemian Belle

The new lehenga

The wild child within will rejoice at the sight of this colourful gypset chic look. Fun and flirty, the punch of color complements the dull gold beautifully. We suggest wearing this skirt and boxy crop top for an upcoming mehendi function.

Sabyasachi: Vintage Swag

The new lehenga

Sabyasachi’s ’70s-inspired stripped crops with full floral skirts are the season’s talking point. Effortless sexy and oh-so-stylish, this pairing (the tiger belt included!) went on our wishlist the minute we laid eyes on it. The designer, it seems, can do no wrong.

Kavita Bhartia: Pretty as a Picture

The new lehenga

Preppy with a feminine desi twist just about sums up this Kavita Bhartia number. Soft fabrics and signature appliqué hand embroidery makes this outfit decidedly pretty. The mixing of textures seals its fate as a winning head turner.

Babita Malkani: Out of the Box

The new lehenga

Dare to bare? Then this showstopper outfit from Babita Malkani’s LFW collection makes for an interesting choice. That crop top really does have our heart. Toned arms and oodles of confidence are a must for this one!

Anju Modi: Princess Diaries

The new lehenga

Anju Modi had a more youthful approach this time with a fantasy-inspired collection that exuded decadence and luxury. This blazer paired with a sheer shirt and panel skirt is fit for a modern-day princess. It helps that neo jackets are the season’s au courant must-have.

Shruti Sancheti: Quirk It Up

The new lehenga

Mainstream is so boring and this boho-chic offering is the perfect antidote. This well-constructed cap sleeved bohemian crop with its ombre silk skirt has gypset fashionista written all over it. We recommend a fishtail braid and minimal accessories with this one.

Malaika Arora Khan’s Top 5 Desi Looks

6hi09xyupgs9usp

The Chaiyan Chaiyan girl, Malaika Arora Khan, has been stealing hearts since the 90’s, and after several years in the industry she wears many (stylish) hats apart from just model, muse and former VJ — she’s also a successful fashion entrepreneur, fitness inspiration, and if it isn’t obvious, Bollywood’s hottest mom!!

While sexy numbers that flaunt her svelte and enviable frame are her perennial favorites, she does give desi ensembles a go every now and then too! And her new stylist, Maneka Harisinghani is pulling all the stops to allow this siren to show us her sophisticated and subtle side. So make no mistake — while Mrs. Khan can rock the hell out of that bodycon dress, she sure knows how to look like a million bucks in the classic six-yards as well. We round up her top traditional looks for some wedding-season inspiration.

Go for Gold

This all lace Vikram Phadnis sari paired with a sleeveless blouse is a sure winner in our books. It’s feminine and flirty while oozing unabashed glamour. It helps that head-to-toe gold is a trend du jour as well. A winning look for your bestie’s destination wedding, isn’t it?

malaika-arora-in-vikram-phadnis

Luxemi Pick: Get your dose of old-world charm with Luxemi’s gold sequinned sari. Don’t forget to opt for burgundy or wine lips to take this look a notch higher.

Fresh as a Daisy

The diva is known to be partial to deeper tones, which is why we were pleasantly surprised to see her in this cheery summer-ready lehenga by Seema Khan for her sis-in-law Arpita Khan’s wedding. Not only does the bright color take some years off, it’s perfect for a mehendi too!

malaika-arora-in-seema-khan

Luxemi Pick: You too can make everyone green with envy in our Lime Green Gota Work sari. Jhumkis are all this look needs!

More Wine Please!

Now, we all know that marsala is the color of the year, what with Pantone’s endorsement and celebrity approvals! Malaika, too, was quick to jump onto the bandwagon with this regal Manish Malhotra creation. The floor length anarkali accentuates her hourglass figure beautifully and adds height as well.

malaika-arora-in-manish-malhotra

Luxemi Pick: Luxemi’s wine salwar with embroidery promises a similar look. Wear it a la Malaika i.e. by simply adding statement earrings!

Black Beauty

Black is always fashionable and Mrs. Khan sports the timeless color in all its classic glory in this Shantanu and Nikhil draped sari. From a cocktail party to a reception, this versatile number will always be on point!

malaika-arora-in-shantanu-and-nikhil

Luxemi Pick: Take a leaf out of the style diva’s book and wear this charming crinkled georgette sari in an offbeat drape, spruced with kundan jewelry.

Pastel Perfection

Bollywood’s sworn hottie channeled her inner mermaid while looking pretty as a picture in this Sonaakshi Raaj sari gown with just the right pop of pink via her lips. The blouse with its mesh detailing and unforgiving color is not an easy one to sport, giving us yet another reason to love her impeccable style!

malaika-arora-in-sonaakshi-raaj

Luxemi Pick: Feel the aqua rush in this sari with mirror work by Satya Paul available on Luxemi. Wear it with statement earrings and a maang tikka for the next summer wedding you attend!

Celeb Inspiration: 3 Summer Wedding Hairstyles

Summer wedding hairstyles

Image: Vogue India

The sun is up and the wedding season is upon us — which means only one thing…you need to bring you’re A-game to the shaadi-scape. Your outfits and jewelry may be in place but don’t overlook another important aspect — your hair. It can make or break the look, after all. As the temperatures rise, ditch your poker straight hair for three alternative fun looks that we spotted on our favorite Bollywood stylistas. You’ll be basking in the sun (and compliments) in no time!

Sonam Kapoor’s Fishtail Braid: For the outdoor sangeet

A perennial favorite, this one is made to one side for a softer feel. Pair it with a lehenga, sharara or floor length anarkali, it will work like a charm every single time!

Summer wedding hairstyles

  • Go get a comb and clear elastic hairband.
  • Remove all tangles and put your mane behind your shoulders.
  • Divide it into two sections from top to bottom. Don’t forget that this whole braid is to the side, so position it accordingly.
  • Take a small piece of hair from the outside of one of the two main sections and bring it to the inside of the opposite section.
  • Now make the exact same cross but this time on the opposite side.  Don’t forget to keep the crosses tight.
  • Keep doing the same from each side into the inside of each section, until you see an inverted braiding pattern develop.
  • Finish the plait by tying it with a clear elastic hairband.
  • Remember that this looks best with a slept-in texture, so pull out a few strands for a slightly messy look.

Alia Bhatt’s Messy Chignon: For an effortlessly chic vibe

Universally chic, this fashion girl go-to is the perfect pick to highlight your statement earrings!

Summer wedding hairstyles

  • Get yourself some bobby pins, a tail comb, hairspray and an elastic hairband.
  • Give your hair a slight bouffant by pulling out the front layers for a smooth and voluminous effect.
  • Tie your hair in a low pony resting at the nape.
  • Roll the pony in an anti clockwise and keep coiling it. Don’t use too much force as we are aiming for a messy structure.
  • Finally, twist it into a standard bun at the desired height. Pin it with bobby pins that discreetly slip in. Pull out a few hair strands and loosen it for a disheveled look. Remember that the whole idea is to avoid a prim and proper vibe.
  • Add light hairspray to keep your bun in place.
  • This style works best on hair that hasn’t been washed for a day. Alternatively you can use texturizing hair spray or leave the hair be untouched before styling.

Deepika Padukone’s Bohemian Pouf: For the modern-day princess

Mod is in vogue and this sexy bohemian pouf is the ideal way to pay ode to the decade. Don’t forget to throw on a headpiece when sporting this look!

Summer wedding hairstyles

  • Grab the usual suspects: hair spray, bobby pins, rattail comb, and rollers.
  • Part your hair and backcomb/tease the entire front section it to give a nice lift. Be sure that none of the hair falls on your face and is neatly tucked back, framing your face.
  • Secure your bouffant using pins and set it with hairspray.
  • Turn your attention to the bottom half now. Start separating the hair into different sections and curl them in with a hot curling iron rod. You can also do this with rollers before creating the pouf.
  • Add some hair spray before securing the headpiece. Voila! You are ready to dance all night long!

Which hairstyle would you rather sport? Tell us in the comment box below!

Deepica Mutyala isn’t new around these parts. You may recognize her from that insane red lipstick video that went viral earlier this year or from the beauty advice she regularly doles out on social media. We love how she makes beauty approachable with a slew of tips and tricks to make our lives just a bit easier, and of course, way prettier. With our favorite (wedding) season in full swing, we’re already looking for fresh inspiration because how many black smokey eyes can a gal do, right? So how pumped were we when we found out our favorite beauty guru was filming an Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial? Answer: Very. We got the full low down PLUS a few extra tips that didn’t make it in the video below.

Extra Makeup Tips from Deepica:

1) Contouring: If you don’t have dedicated contour products at home, try using your bronzer or a foundation that’s a shade or two darker than your skin tone which gives you the same effect.

2) Concealer: Go heavier than you normally would for a wedding. By picking a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation, you get a natural illumination on your skin, but it’s super important not to go TOO light either. That’s when you see chalkiness!

3) Hair: I did a twist on a traditional braid for my look. My favorite thing to do for weddings is take traditional looks and give it a modern twist. That applies for hair too!

4) Highlighter: Glowing skin is a must for desi weddings! If you don’t have a dedicated highlighter at home, use a shimmer pale eyeshadow and apply it to the parts of your face you want to pop. For me, that’s the bow of my lip, under the brows, corners of the eyes, bridge of the nose, and the bone under your eye.

Whether it’s a sheer lehenga for the sangeet or embroidered palazzos for the mehendi, they can elevate any wedding look in a jiffy. All you need to do is mix up the jewellery and switch the dupatta. So be sure to pack one and plan certain looks around it.

If you plan to wear lehegnas for all the functions, we suggest you get them made without the can-can (frilly petticoat underneath). Instead get the designer to create a separate can-can skirt, which you can, then wear with all your lehengas and flowy skirts!

Sharing is Caring

Being the make-up mavens that we are, it’s a shame that we can’t pack our entire make-up drawer when we’re headed out of town. Luckily, that’s where girlfriends come to the rescue! You can always fall back on fail safe looks like smokey eyes, glittery lids and bold pouts. So divide and conquer, make a Whatsapp group, and designate who needs to carry what.

Jeweled Tales

Jewelry is expensive and risky to carry when travelling, so pack that one statement piece that can be the highlight of most of your looks. Don’t shy away from costume or semi-precious jewelry either. Also look into carrying pieces that are versatile. For instance, you can easily wear a rustic polki haar as a neckpiece on one occasion and double it as a headgear for another function. The fun doesn’t stop here; it can easily be used as a delicate hath phool too. Even if people do call your bluff, at least you won’t be that girl who lost her grandma’s heirloom bangle on the beach!

Shoe Story

Luxemi destination wedding guide

We know that in an ideal world you would have packed a separate suitcase just for your footwear. But since you can’t, simply pack 2-3 basics in gold, silver and bronze, ones that will match all your looks. We also suggest limiting the number of heels as they take up more space. Not only are flats easier to carry, they are also more comfortable, which will ensure that you are the last one standing on the dance floor!

The Golden Rules

Some quick tips and tricks to save the day!

  • Pre dry clean and launder everything. Last minute laundering at the hotel can and often does go wrong.
  • Double pack liquids. You don’t want your raw silk sari to be damaged with shampoo stains.
  • Extra lingerie, fewer accessories.
  • It’s always advisable to carry an extra outfit, because you never know!

Mega watt Indian destination weddings are the best kind. After bringing you the ultimate destination wedding packing guide, we just had to give you a destination wedding dressing 101 too. After all, what you’ll wear to a beach wedding will be infinitely different from what a palace wedding demands. Our guide is here to lay all your burning questions to rest!

And if you’ve been complaining about all your beloved lehengas gathering dust, then what are you waiting for? Pack them all without further ado! We suggest a nod to traditional prints and fabrics like gota patti and brocade, topped off with polki jewelry.

We’re placing our bets on white and ivory picks — serene hues to complement sunset nuptials on the beach! Steer clear of saris and OTT anarkalis. Lightweight salwars in breathable fabrics or traditional maxis are your best bet. Throw in some floral jewelry to the mix for a dash of easy chic fun!

Layering Necklaces 101

MG_9664

Want to update your look with some stop-and-stare intrigue? Layering necklaces—the “it” accessory trend of the year—is the fail safe way to go and it’s what style set and fashion frat is swearing by too! That’s pretty much all the convincing we need to jump on this utterly chic bandwagon.

Throwing on a range of necklaces in varying lengths and textures adds diversity and movement to a look. It also gives us fashionistas a free playground to mix and match like a boss. What’s more, you can flaunt a bunch of your eye-catching buys in one go. And while there aren’t any pre-prescribed rules to layer, a few ace pointers will ensure that you’ll never go wrong with this accessorizing style!

Untitled-1

  • Start small. Start with the smallest necklace and then add bolder pieces to the mix. Starting with a choker or dainty pendant works well.
  • The next piece works wonders if it’s in a different style, say a bar necklace added to a choker, for instance. Finish with a flourish—the longest chain necklace would be our pick. And voilà, you’re good to go!
  • Make sure the outfit you pick is relatively fuss-free. Clashing metals over embellished blouses will just make the look too distracting—you need your layered wonders to be the highlight of the look, after all. Pastels and clean cuts with minimum print usually work best with this kind of accessorising.
  • Multiple chains instantly elevate a salwar or kurta. So skip the dupatta—let your baubles take center stage. An overcrowded look is just going to play spoilsport.
  • Don’t constantly fidget with your army of chains in a bid to set them. Let them fall where they may. Micro managing these strands will only complicate things—let physics take its natural course and focus on wearing your beauties with the confidence they deserve.
  • Diversity is the king, Adorn chains in a plethora of varying lengths and styles. Aim for contrasting aesthetics. For instance, we can’t think of anything more head turning combination than a gold temple jewelry choker with a soft pearl strand for a well curated effect.

urvashi-kaur-and-gul-panag

Fusion clothing is all the rage at the moment—every designer is busy converting saris into gowns and turning peplum tops into blouses in a bid to add their own unique twist to traditional wear. In the midst of so many who struggle to achieve the perfect balance, there is one name that stands out as an effortless infuser. Urvashi Kaur’s contemporary and unique interpretation of Indian textiles provides a much-needed breath of fresh air in a sea of sameness. Her wearable, sustainable and affordable collections are just what the modern Indian woman wants.

urvashi2

A graduate in fashion from ESMOD International, Paris, Urvashi began her career by working under fashion moguls like Marcel Marongiu, Lolita Lempika and Issey Miyake. In her earlier years, she was involved in theater and never really saw herself as a fashion designer until she was asked to create costumes for the first Broadway show in India, ‘Starlight Express’ by Aamir Raza Hussain. That’s when it hit her that fashion was where she belonged. Her label began as an attempt to revive India’s vibrant textiles through designs that are global in construction. Since her debut at Lakme Fashion Week Spring/Summer ’08, she began to showcase at various fashion weeks across the country, quickly carving a niche for herself.

11745372_388250891366485_7633559164053001851_n

Struck by wanderlust, Urvashi admits that her travels are the treasure trove she draws inspiration from. Exploring and discovering new worlds, she loves learning what makes a particular place and its people tick. For instance, her Spring/Summer ’15 collection is based on her experience visiting Xining, a remote city in China, located high up on the Tibetan plateau. The free-spirited nature of the people there forms the cornerstone of this collection and can be seen and felt in every piece.

URVASHI-KAUR-2

Although innumerable fashion designers choose to go bold with graphic and art-inspired prints, Kaur focuses more on keeping her silhouettes androgynous while experimenting with fabrics and colours. The one thing that truly shines about her design aesthetic is the fact that there is immense scope to mix and match. A blue form-fitting sheath dress can instantly be converted to an anarkali by throwing on a churidar and dupatta, while you can pair her signature dhoti salwars with a more western top.

celebs

Based on her glocal philosophy, Kaur’s designs promote Indian textiles while being noticeably international in their appeal. Her use of Indian weaves, such as kota, mulmul and chanderi, along with age-old Indian techniques, like block printing and ikat prints is absolutely incredible. Heralding a new age of sustainable luxury, the designer’s creations are much loved by Bollywood’s sweethearts too. From Shradhha Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra to Neha Dhupia and Tisca Chopra, no one can resist the charms of Urvashi’s chic, laid back and eco-friendly fashion.

AICW2015

Just recently, the crème de la crème of the fashion fraternity descended in Delhi for Amazon India Couture Week 2015 (read: 29th July – 2nd August). Some of the country’s best couturiers showcased their bridal wear—from cocktail gowns to fusion ethnic wear—proving, once again, that beautiful excess is here to stay. Whether it was Persian folklore, boho-luxe or floral motifs; each and every show was a pure visual feast! We round up the designers who set the stage on fire.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee

sabya

When the king of bridal wear, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, pairs up with the king of red soles, Christian Louboutin, everyone hopes to catch a glimpse of the action! Sabya’s signature voluminous lehengas came with a twist—they were trimmed down to slimming, figure-skimming silhouettes. Saris made an appearance with long jackets, capes and corsets. When it came to the embroidery, the designer went all out with dense work in muted gold.

 Manish Malhotra

mm

Deep red, forest green and glamorous gold—the ultimate shades for Indian brides—dominated the runway at Manish Malhotra’s show. The designer focused mostly on western couture, like enormous skirts and velvet jackets that would work for cocktail and reception parties. He added a refreshing spin to florals, presenting large motifs that were bright, colourful and funky. The show also marked the return of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to the ramp, sizzling in a breath-taking marsala gown with splashes of gold!

 Rimple and Harpreet Narula

rhnarula

Rimple and Harpreet Narula’s collection was an ode to the splendor and extravaganza with which Indian Maharajas led their lives. The line paid homage to regal insignia as well as fine craftsmanship in shades of ivory, beige, burnt gold, and ruby red. Consisting of gold karigari, handcrafted embroidery, and crystals embedded on capes, robes, billowy jackets, majestic cloaks and lehengas; each piece narrated the interactions of Indian royals with western influences. Showstopper Shilpa Shetty shined in a shimmery gold lehenga choli, truly making it a royal affair to remember!

 Anju Modi

anjumodi

Persian folklore came alive on the runway with Anju Modi’s show. Inspired by miniature paintings, Rumi’s verses, Islamic influences, and fairytales, the designer’s models were dressed in traditionally ornate wedding attire. The collection’s highlights were her voluminous lehengas worn with intricately embroidered cholis and multiple dupattas. Modi didn’t ignore the new-age woman either—the unconventional combination of contrasting hues, such as turquoise with black, mustard with blood red, or even mint green with rani pink, will be a hit among modern brides.

 Varun Bahl

varunb

Varun Bahl’s classic lehengas, saree gowns and anarkalis were an aesthetic treat with their fascinating floral designs. Seen in delicate fabrics like tulle, georgette, silk, and crochet, the outfits came in hues of sensual creams, pale pinks, glossy golds, reds, and blacks. The ensembles featuring gold-tinted 3D roses and pearls stole the show, while a pair of trousers with floral embroidery was the obvious showstopper!

 Rohit Bal

rohitbal

Flora and fauna were the predominant theme at the ever-theatrical Rohit Bal’s sprawling showcase. Clusters of red, black and white roses worn around the models’ heads and necks added to the drama. Flowing lehenga skirts and structured sherwani jackets were detailed with Persian embroidery. The motifs consisted of florae, various long-tailed birds, and even elephants and camels. The best part was the flutes of champagne held by models; enhancing the celebratory mood every wedding party and Rohit Bal show carries!

Fashion Hacks Every Desi Girl Ought To Know!

145082_orig

Whoever said shortcuts will get you nowhere was obviously mistaken. The right short cuts can change your life. Dramatic? Maybe. But we found a few hacks that will instantly take your Indian clothing game to the next level. Not only are these Luxemi-approved, they also have the power to transform your wardrobe (which is synonymous with changing your life, of course).

  • Dressed to the nines but just noticed the creased collar of your kurta? Don’t fret! Just pull out your hair straightener and iron away!
  • In case you’re running late for an event and still haven’t done your hair, skip the neat bun or braids. Simply spritz on some sea-salt spray and get ready to break a few hearts with your desirable waves!
  • Dropped some of your favorite red on your brand new cream sari? No need to worry! Just dab it gently with a cloth soaked in white wine to do away with the blot. And then pour yourself another glass, maybe?
  • Yellow sweat patches can often be a menace on light colored clothes. Spray some lemon juice on the stains before you put them to wash.
  • Never wear freshly ironed clothes right away. Let the fabric cool for 5 minutes to avoid creating new wrinkles.
  • Can’t find your earring clasp? Use a small piece of eraser as the substitute!
  • Having trouble wearing your new embellished jootis? Place a bag of water in each one to stretch them out and leave them overnight in a freezer. If you don’t have time to do that, just put on a pair of socks underneath them and blow dry!
  • Liquid dishwasher detergent and an old toothbrush are the only things you need to keep your diamonds set sparkling forever!
  • Hang your heavy anarkalis and lehengas overnight to get rid of creases on them.
  • Your maang tikka giving you trouble yet again? After securing it in your hair with pins, use double-sided tape to secure it to your forehead.
  • Need to try on a churidar but don’t have the time to try it at the store? Check if the waist of the pants wraps around your neck once, without any overlaps. If it does, then it will fit you just fine!
  • If the zippers on your salwar keep getting stuck, rub them with a lead pencil and watch them slide smoothly!
  • Pin a safety pin to the inside of your salwar or blouse in case of an emergency. If a button pops or the zipper breaks, you’ll be prepared!
  • Place muslin cloth or a plastic sheet between every fold of real zari saris. This will not only keep the colour intact, but will also make sure none of the embellishments scratch into each other.

Designer Spotlight: Raw Mango

sanjay1

2014 may have been Rahul Mishra’s year, but 2015 surely looks like it belongs to Sanjay Garg. Born and raised in a small village called Mubarikpur in Rajasthan, Garg comes from a well-to-do business background. After quitting the Indian Institute of Craft & Design, he soon left to join NIFT in New Delhi, which helped him build the sensibilities required for textile design.

sanjaygarg

The designer then went on to work for store, Shades Of India, and also started taking on other small projects like the Chanderi Cluster Development Programme, where he came across weavers in the Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh. That’s when he had his aha! moment and made it his mission to make simplicity a brand statement.

sanjay2

Garg launched label Raw Mango in 2008 with the intention to revitalize traditional techniques to create contemporary Indian hand-woven textiles. By introducing design interventions at the weaving stage, the idea was to make textiles softer and easier to drape. The main purpose of this was to get the younger generation to develop an interest in handloom saris. He then took conventional Indian motifs like house sparrows, parrots, trees, lotuses, marigolds, cows, coins and created Indian wear in divine shades!

RM1

Today, with more than 450 craftspeople working at the helm, the brand is focused on making saris, dupattas, stoles and fabrics with minimalism as the predominant theme. Garg doesn’t believe in using “gimmickry or glamour” in his collections, instead each piece is aimed at delivering high quality pieces backed by great design. Not one to make a big show about his winning collections, he lets his work speak for himself and hardly uses any advertising. While most designers love seeing their creations splashed across fashion magazines, Sanjay Garg couldn’t be bothered. He believes curiosity is the greatest marketing tool and that is what brings his clients to him.

rm2

The designer isn’t so keen about fashion shows either. Despite being in the industry for so many years, he debuted his first ever runway collection at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014. The showcase included lush fabrics, which took the form of empire waist dresses, kurta-pyjama suits, and heritage saris.

Sanjay-Garg

Planning a destination wedding is no piece of cake. It takes months and months of organizing, inviting and coordinating! Oh and let’s not forget, the pain of packing for those invited! It’s completely unlike packing for any other vacation—given how fragile and expensive your wedding items can be, you’re definitely going to be under immense pressure and stress. The trouble of customs and excess luggage can instantly send you in a tizzy. But don’t you worry, because we’ve got you covered with a list of what NOT to carry to the next dream destination wedding you’re attending. Read on to find out!

Your entire collection of real jewelry

Let’s face it, when you’re travelling to another city or country, there is always the possibility of luggage going missing. Or what if something gets misplaced at the hotel? That’s why it’s better to stick to semi-precious baubles instead of the real deal.

Never-ending layers

There’s no debating that you want to look your best. You’ve probably even purchased a fair share of heavy lehengas and anarakalis, but how are you going to pack them? Clothing with layers of can-can are best avoided. Choose lighter options like sleek kurtas and fuss-free saris that are easy to pack.

 Fragile items

You do not want to see your precious Indian wear getting ruined. Heavily embroidered saris or particularly delicate ones, stiff corset blouses, and lehengas with plenty of work should not be stuffed into your suitcase. They deserve extra TLC so save them for a wedding in your hometown.

Uncomfortable heels

Doesn’t matter if you’re the bride or the guest; weddings mean hours of standing and socializing and, of course, dancing! Don’t pack heels that will leave your feet sore the next day, making it difficult for you to enjoy the rest of the festivities. Opt for wedges and platforms over stilettoes for maximum comfort. There’s nothing like flats, of course!

Too many hair appliances

Don’t carry your entire arsenal of heavy hair appliances. Most hotels have hair dryers and, if you’re looking to get ironing or curling done, there is bound to be a salon nearby. Or, coordinate with your friends so you aren’t lugging your entire bathroom cabinet with you!
