Payal Singhal is making waves in Indian fashion circles

It’s a hard world for Indian fashion out there: you’re walking a tightrope between traditionally intricate motifs and embroidery with minimalistic Western lines and cuts. But Payal Singhal seems to have gotten the balance just perfectly, with industry insiders at Lakme Fashion Week excited about her take on modern Indian fashion.

This isn’t your standard saree shop collection, Luxe fans. We’re talking edgy takes on traditional salwars & anarkalis with tons of lehengas thrown in, all with a healthy dose of traditional “jaali” and filigree work (floral designs dating back to the Mughal empire) for bold global statements.

We’re totally digging the long-sleeve saree blouse (we wrote a how-to-wear guide here before) and Payal’s effortless way to make a saree everyday accessible with a tunic and statement jewelry, as seen below.

So what’s Payal’s thought process in making these effortlessly glam getups? Here’s what the designer had to say about the influences behind her most recent collection, tips for accessorizing outfits, and her uniform for hanging out in the city.

Luxemi: Tell us about your inspiration for this year’s LFW collection and why you felt it was important to integrate swadeshi (locally made) textiles?
Payal: The inspiration started from a book I was referencing for work. It was a book on Islamic architecture where all the textures and patterns were inspired from monuments; the Taj Mahal is the epitome of that. We always use a lot of Indian textiles in our collections because the brand motto is to make Indian clothes with Indian textile, but in a global context.

Luxemi: Describe the Payal Singhal girl – Who is she? Where does she live? What’s her style?
Payal: The Payal Singhal girl can live anywhere, but she’s confident and not afraid to experiment with her style.

Luxemi: What do you think the trends will be for spring/summer wedding fashion this year?
Payal: I think minimalistic, earthy glamour is what will be in fashion this year for the summer brides: cool colors like sand, cream and grey with pops of warm colors like red and yellow and gold tones. It will be more about style than embroidery.

Luxemi: You split your time in New York and Mumbai. What’s your go-to outfit for a night out on the town in New York? Do you change it up when you’re in Mumbai?
Payal: In New York, it’s easy. I usually put on leggings and  Frye boots and any wrinkle-free tunic from DVF (something that doesn’t need to be ironed!). I don’t do much different in Mumbai, except switch out the boots for some peep-toe pumps.

Luxemi: Your name is Payal, which refers to the Sanskrit word for “anklet.” What are your rules for accessorizing Indian outfits?
Payal: I always have one focal accessory and don’t over accessorize, so either a statement earring or necklace or ring – but never all 3 together.

Looking to inject a little Payal playfulness in your weary wardrobe? Try pairing an ornate blouse with high-waisted pants. Or drape your salwar in pretty patterns that are elegant yet chic. Neutrals in black, gold and white are anything but boring when your inspiration is the Taj Mahal!

With warmer temperatures comes higher hemlines. And we’re not just talking about your pants and skirts.

Crop tops are making a comeback from their 90s heyday. This isn’t a look for the timid, but if you’re willing to experiment, the crop top promises some va-va-voom for your spring wardrobe. Poppin’ trendsetters like Miley Cyrus and Diane Kruger have stepped out in this trend, and you can too!

And here’s a novel idea: we’re thinking our sari blouses are so gorgeous, why limit them to your special events? Get some extra use out of ‘em and put an ethnic flair on this trend for something equal parts chic and head-turning. Luxemi has shared tips in the past for how to pull this look off, but here’s some fresh inspiration and advice.

TIP 1: BLAZE SOME TRAILS WITH A BLAZER.

Button up that blazer if you’re feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Yes, that workplace staple is a savior come sundown. Whether it’s happy hour or a date with that special someone, err on the side of sophistication with a simple blazer and jeans. Alternate ideas: a shawl or well-tied scarf can be a trendy, unique take on this look.

TIP 2: OPPOSITES ATTRACT.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

You’ve got tons of choices when pairing tops with potential bottoms, but aim to not overexpose with a mini-skirt or your skimpiest shorts. A little coverage goes a long way in being sexy without looking like you’re going to a rave. This might be a good time to pull out those MC Hammer pants you can’t get rid of or those slouchy gauchos. P.S.: Fitted crop tops couple beautifully with baggier pieces. Just ask Miley.

TIP 3: WHICH WAY TO THE GUN SHOW?

Doutzen Kroes knows how to do it: enough skin to scintillate without getting scandalous.

As in: check out your arms. If you have a sleeve on that crop top, you can afford to go higher on your hemline. Shorter sleeves means a maxi can be your go-to. Think balance: you’re cutting hemlines on one piece, so consider lowering the other.

Lace sarees are one of our favorite new trends, especially in the warmer weather!  The anarkali trend is one that’s here to stay, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. The latest suits are deep in color and high on style—collared necklines, longer sleeves in sheer nets, and tons of embellished embroidery, are just some of the ways designers are taking this traditional outfit and adding a modern dose of glamour. You are guaranteed to see at least one stunning anarkali dress at nearly any Manish Malhotra runway show. His recent collections have showcased a rich color palette—including deep purples, blues, and pinks—paired with brocade borders and sheer long sleeves. Pairing clashing prints together. We’ve been crushing on this fashion forward style for a few seasons now, which is a great way to inject some spunk to your Indian wear.

We love teaming a sari or lehenga with a contrasting print blouse. Throwing on a clashing dupatta over that salwar or lehenga gets our vote too. Go a step further and opt for accessories, especially clutches in prints that will stand out.

Aimen Agha & Armaan Randhawa:

•   “Mix black and white Madhubani hand prints with colorful bandhej for a stunning look.
•  Kalamkari intricate paisley prints mixed with geometric stripes, checks and Aztec prints of similar tones look gorgeous together.
• Never use big polka dots or bold big motifs with intricate smaller prints.
• Don’t mix different base fabrics like silks with cottons. Together they don’t give a smooth look.”               

 Rixi Bhatia & Jayesh Sachdeva:

• “Mix prints, but always offset it with solid colored tones. The prints should work well together in terms of a story. Different kinds of floral prints go together and geometric works with abstract.
• Keep the accessories subtle and minimal. Your prints are the key element and too many accessories will clash with it, leading to a messy look.
• Don’t buy a garment just because you like the print. The silhouette is equally important.
• Don’t match your clothes and accessories with the same print. Wear printed accessories with solid colour outfits and vice-versa.”

Aditi Holani:

• “Don’t be afraid to combine an eccentric mix of prints from different families like floral, abstract and stripes.
• If the print is elaborate, use subtle colors. Keep the prints simpler with loud neon colors.
• Don’t combine two big prints, it looks very busy.”

Aditi Holani advises mixing prints from different families. Blake Lively owns the look in a Gossip Girl episode.

 Nitin Chawla:

• “Mix prints of same color family (for e.g. grey and black, yellow and orange) and combine patterns of different densities and sizes. While one can become the focus point, the other can complement it.
• Balance and scale is the key. Small prints are a better option for those who are petite. Whereas for larger body frames, both small and big prints work well.
• Mixing too many prints at the same time is a no-no. Not more than two prints should be mixed at one time.”

Pronoy Kapoor:

• “Pair geometric and abstract prints together. For this, one must choose neutral and earthy tones. Add a hint of glitter for a festive vibe.
• Since neon colors are in, one could mix traditional prints available in these hues. Also try and throw in some solid block colors for the perfect look.”

Aptly titles ‘Reflections’, the ramp was divided into two halves by a threaded veil as the models walked down simultaneously as mirror images of each other. Further dotted with a shower of lights, it was quite the sight to behold!

Fashion and celebrity stylist Kushal Parmanand jokingly refers to himself as an “Indian fashion industry fossil!” And considering he’s got over 10 years of experience under his belt, we get why (well, kind of!). His foray into the industry was one most can only dream of — he kick started his career with revered couturiers Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla after which he moved on to working with Nandita Mahtani. Styling came knocking his way in the form of a Fashion Directorship at Seventeen India, followed by stints at L’Officiel India, L’Officiel Homme, Hi!Blitz and most recently Noblesse India. His stellar repertoire also boasts of styling Bollywood beauties like Bipasha Basu, Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre among others. We engage the stylist du jour in an exclusive tete-a-tete!

Luxemi: How did you foray into fashion? Is it something you always wanted? 

Kushal Parmanand: My foray into fashion was actually by default. I come from a family of two generations of engineers and they obviously wished for me to continue their legacy. After trying to pursue an education in computer science and management studies for two years, I finally landed at Fanshawe fashion school in June 2000 to pursue my true calling. I remember wanting to be in fashion, a designer in particular, since I was in 8^th grade. Rohit Bal was my idol then.

Luxemi: You have worked with some of the country’s top stylistas — right from Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor to Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif. Who are your personal favorites?

Kushal Parmanand: I think I have the biggest crush on Bebo (Kareena Kapoor)! She is undoubtedly my favorite. She is extremely easy going and a breeze to work with. Most celebrities today know what works for them and are quite fashion focused. Having worked with many of them editorially over the years I feel that working collectively and keeping common interests in mind helps get the best out of a shoot!

Luxemi: Who are some of your favorite Indian and international designers?

Kushal Parmanand: Wow that is a very tough and long list! I love the work Riccardo Tisci does for Givenchy couture. This seasons in particular; I am loving key pieces from Balenciaga, Monique Lhuillier and Vionnet while Elie Saab, Dior, Valentino and Lanvin remain eternal favorites. On the Indian front I love different designers for their varied focuses. Anamika Khanna, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Gaurav Gupta are my favorite veterans. From the younger lot I am partial to Kallol Datta, Sailex and Nachiket Barve.

Actually I feel fashion is a bit fickle in that sense — every season you are bound to love that someone a little more purely because their showing tugged at your heart strings more than the others.

Luxemi: Autumn-Winter ’13 Indian wear trends that ought to be tried this season? Also tell us about the top colors one must have in their wardrobe? 

Kushal Parmanand: Monochrome continues to be a huge trend this season. Punk and vintage inspired fashion is also big. Think of smaller ways to include them in your traditional wardrobe. Red is THE color to be swearing by — not only is it one of our most traditional colors, it also looks lovely on Indian skin. Make sure to experiment with interesting updos and accessories for a refined look.

Luxemi: Style icons who carry Indian wear beautifully? 

Kushal Parmanand: I think Deepika (Padukone) looks great in Indian wear. She has an inherent grace about her, almost like royalty. Apart from her I think Kareena (Kapoor) looks her best when she is in a sari.

Luxemi: Your favorite picks from Luxemi.com? 

Kushal Parmanand: Laila Motwane’s lehangas, the coral wrap kurta from Nikasha,  saris by Neeru Kumar and jhumkis  from Amrapali are my top picks. Kushal Parmanand: The chotu sari (one with a shorter hemline) is a great option.

If neither works for you, there is always the humble salwar kurta which has many interesting variations this season. I personally always steer towards a minimalistic look. Deepika Padukone is our latest Bollywood girl crush. This doe-eyed beauty has earned some serious style cred with her recent super chic sartorial picks, making one thing very clear —this stylista can do no wrong. Ever since her movie Cocktail, she seems to be on a style roll, putting only her most fashionable foot forward. When I interviewed her a couple of months back, she simply brushed off this ‘style icon’ tag saying that she blindly trusts her stylist when it comes to her appearances (modestly skipping that not everyone can pull off the looks she does). And the stylist in question, Vogue India’s Anaita Shroff Adajania, constantly seems to be pushing the envelope when it comes to Padukone’s wardrobe. Here’s a round up of the looks we love most on her!

Monochrome is a hot favorite with this B-town’s fashionista and it’s a look she wears well. Take a cue from her and slip into our Black and White Hand Painted Saree by Satya Paul. Accentuate the look, as Padukone often does, with a pop of color by way of footwear, accessories or red lips.

Kangana Ranaut Vogue January 2014

For us, Himachal-girl Kangana Ranaut is Bollywood’s true resident fashionista. We agree that she gets lost in a sea of Sonams and Deepikas sometimes, but there’s no arguing that this 26-year-old knows style. And if you’re still not convinced, consider this; she is one of the few actresses who dresses herself for her appearances, as opposed to slipping into what a stylist hands her. Refreshing and impressive, isn’t it?

What we love most about her style is how she is constantly experimenting with her looks; refusing to be put in a straitjacket. One day you’ll see her sitting front row at Burberry while another time she will be channeling a fierce Lady Gaga-esque look with the same effortless élan. She can sport a crop top and midi skirt with as much ease as a Sabyasachi stunner and therein lies her true sartorial victory. She is a style chameleon and that’s no act. So here’s your guide to making this it-girl’s style your own!

The one complaint we have with this curly -haired beauty is that we don’t often get to see her in Indian clothing. That’s changing, though, as she sets out to promote her new movie, Queen. The international fraternity may take a break from fashion week come March but it’s just the beginning for the Indian fash frat. After all it’s time for a fashion extravaganza more fondly known as  Lakmé Fashion Week! And just like every season, we lived on a steady dose of fashion for the five days of Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 (read: 12^th-16^th March), with eyes for nothing else.

So once we kicked off our heels after Sunday’s finale show, we decided to dedicate space to some of our favorite traditional looks from the week that was! Here goes…

There were some strong trends that emerged this season. White and muted colors stole the limelight, providing us a much-needed reprieve for the neon overdose. Pretty pastels  also came out as a SS ’14 go-to. Fashion’s love affair with reinvented traditional silhouettes continued as designers sent fresh reinterpretations down the ramp. The churidaar seems to be a thing of the past — as comfort took centre stage, so did bottoms like palazzo pants, dhotis, skirts and loose trousers among others.

Several heavyweight names were part of the roster this season. Tarun Tahiliani presented a collection dominated by black and white and his SS ’14 signature draped saris were a clear top choice for us. Manish Malhotra’s ‘Summer Affair’ drew us in and we gave our vote to his soft hues, toned down floor length kurtas and intricate thread work. Neeta Lulla’s breezy collection was another favorite — especially because it was unlike anything the designer has presented before. This Indo-western line with a younger vibe gets props for wearability. Gaurav Gupta’s collection was high on drama, edgy cuts and signature use of metallic hues.

Anju Modi

All eyes were on industry veteran designer Anju Modi  after her much talked-about styling of Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela. Her line was high on layering, voluminous flares, fluidity and tailored cuts typically associated with her designs. The pop of print was a welcome addition too.

Shantanu and Nikhil

Shantanu & Nikhil’s Victorian-inspired collection was hauntingly beautiful and elegant. We loved the pairing of peplum blouses with the skirts and lehengas. If only they had refrained from that unnecessary runway selfie…

Sari gowns were a ubiquitous pick for most designers and we are particularly digging these looks by Sonaakshi Raaj and Ritika Mirchandani.

Nupur Kanoi

Nupur Kanoi was another top pick owing to her ingenious garment construction, muted color palette and fresh spin on Indian silhouettes. We call dibs on that desi jumpsuit!

Prama by Pratima Pandey

Prama by Pratima Pandey was one of the best Textile Day shows in our opinion. Her feminine line of loose pants, crinkled cotton midis and white sheer tunics with tonal and multi-colored embroidery in silk Chanderi and pure cotton had summer written all over it!

Mrinalini Chandra

Accessory designer Mrinalini Chandra invited everyone to take a seat, quite literally, with her collection of statement pieces in recycled glass stones and semi-precious gems, all inspired by the humble chair. We, for one, can’t wait to flaunt this one!

Nikhil Thampi

And then there was Nikhil Thampi. Yes, we know we said we’re picking out our favorite Indian looks, but we just couldn’t resist. Such was the impact of his power-packed collection called ‘Untamed’. A round of sexy for all the ladies, please!

Pankaj & Nidhi at WIFW AW’14

March is a heavy-duty fashion month for the Indian folks. It is jam packed with two of the biggest fashion events in the country. Case in point: the fash frat was just beginning to recover from Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort ’14 in Mumbai, when they had to pack their bags and head to Delhi for Wills India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter ’14.

We followed all the WIFW action and while we loved most of what we saw we can’t help but play favorites! So here goes.

Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun Tahiliani had just showed at LFW earlier this month, so we were dripping with anticipation to see what he had in store for round two. His showing, ‘Satlada’was a vibrant one indeed — one where jeweled tones, signature drapes, gold jewellery and Mughal references took centre stage.

Abraham & Thakore

Mavens of minimalism, Abraham & Thakore, demonstrated the power of simplicity with their fuss free yet impactful collection that was produced by Varanasi weavers. The animal print was a welcome surprise and we are particular digging the belted saris and the addition of trench coats to it.

Nikasha

The immensely festive vibe of Nikasha’s creations has made her a Luxemi favorite. And her AW ’14 collection, ‘Bibi’, gave us another reason to love her. The frosty pink, subtle champagne, pale peach and fiery red ensembles with hand embroidery, diamante and pearl motifs are perfect to sport at the end-of-the-year weddings.

Frou Frou by Archana Rao

As Vogue India’s Fashion Fund winner, Archana Rao of Frou Frou had a lot riding on this collection. And disappoint, she did not. The strong singular prints, fresh palette and essentially feminine looks caught our eye.

Rahul Mishra

After winning the International Woolmark Prize at Milan Fashion Week earlier this year, all eyes were on Rahul Mishra at WIFW. His award winning collection, inspired by the eight petal white lotus, used a variety of bullion knots, aari embroidery and thread work on sheer, silks, cotton and woollen jersey in addition to the ubiquitous use of bandhani on marino wool. The standing ovation was well deserved indeed.

Dev R Nil

Dev R Nil continued to play on their strength —power prints. They gave us plenty to lust after with their collection that used indigenous printing techniques like batik and handloom weaves. Extra props for the effortless manner in which they paired clashing prints.

Sahil Kochhar

Sahil Kochhar made a particularly strong debut and has the industry waxing eloquent about his statement silhouettes and intricate handiwork. Here’s one to watch out for!

Pankaj & Nidhi

Pankaj & Nidhi’s collection, ‘House of Cards’ borrowed heavily from Spanish culture wherein they took their signature silhouettes — high low hemlines, structured jackets, hand-made appliqué work and intricate detailing — and gave it an androgynous spin.

Vineet Bahl

Vineet Bahl’s collection of florals, Banarasi handlooms and vibrant colors found an instant fan in us. Who’s up for cropped churidaars and ankle length palazzos this autumn? We sure are!

Kiran Uttam Gosh

Kiran Uttam Gosh’s fierce twist to traditional wear was one of the strongest shows this season. The label’s signature drapes made an appearance on the ramp, but this time in muted and gilded hues. What really did the trick was the inspired layering of easy separates to create utterly interesting looks.

Kallol Datta

The King of anti-fit stayed true to his tongue-in-cheek style of designing. Kallol Datta’s selfie sari — splashed with own pictures, was a sure shot talking point this season.

More and more brides are opting for a coherent style running through the entire wedding — from outfits and invites to decor. What’s your take on this?

When designing and planning for your wedding, it’s great to pick one element to run through your events. This binds the whole celebration together! The first glimpse would likely be on your save the dates and invites which set the tone for the wedding and what’s to come. Then of course, you move on to the decor, stationery, entertainment, cake design, food, cocktails, gifts, clothes, lighting, ceremony details, mehendi design and so on.

How would you suggest brides go about styling their wedding? How should she narrow down on one style?

First think about the kind of wedding you envision or what your dream wedding would be like. Think about things you, as a couple, love as well as your favorite colors. Then with all this in mind, you can move on to picking your venues. Your venue should lend itself to the look of the wedding, so that it all fits together seamlessly.

What are some of the most common styles that seem to be popular at the moment?

Every bride wants to do something different. We have had brides who have picked a certain motif which was used everywhere from her sari, to her cake, lighting and gift boxes with personalized ribbon. Anything vintage-inspired is a favorite with me! Other than that, one can also opt for a colorful ‘mela’ style set up, Great Gatsby, old school English charm. You could also pick a print — Aztec, chevron, ikat — and tie that in with every aspect of your wedding. Innovative use of pearls promises an elegant celebration as well.

Tell us about some of the most interesting wedding styles you’ve worked on recently?

We recently personalized table numbers for a guest’s sit-down dinner. Every number was related to a fact you didn’t know about the couple. These was very interesting for guests to read and it ended up being great conversation points. We also recently had another bride, whose beautiful wedding sari border (a very unique weave) was incorporated everywhere — right from her stationery to her wedding cake.

How much is too much?

Its never too much if it’s done in a subtle and tasteful manner. The little details are what guests notice and will remember.

We’re suckers for red carpets, but you probably know that by. After all, there’s nothing a fashion lover looks forward to more than a chic red carpet sighting — a proclaimed ‘style icon’ actually living up to the title she has been bestowed with. So we decided to turn the spotlight on the hits and misses from India’s annual destination award ceremony, IIFA Awards, held at Tampa Bay this year.

Bollywood’s top three leading ladies were easily our favourite red carpet hits too. Deepika Padukone, it seems, can do no wrong. She looked refreshingly beautiful in her red Zuhair Murad gown offset by berry lips. Moving on to one of our favorite desi girls, Priyanka Chopra. The US could well be called her second home (what with her booming music career here, and all that), so there was added pressure on Piggy Chops to nail the perfect look. And disappoint, she did not. She was a vision in that Monique Lhuillier stunner — elegant and simple but definitely not boring. Kareena Kapoor stepped out of her comfort zone with her daring Armani number, and for that, we give her extra props. And it helps that she always has her dashing prince for arm candy.

Dia Mirza was another favourite. After all, how can we fault a winning Sabyasachi creation? To her credit, the actress wears the floor length anarkali well too. Aditi Rao Hydari, another rising style icon, did ample justice to her vintage look in Gauri & Nainika.

And then there were those who left us a tad disappointed. Richa Chadda’s Falguni & Shane Peacock sheer gown just just didn’t work. Don’t get us wrong — we’re all for flashing a little skin and some experimentation but something was seriously amiss with her look. Parineeti Chopra’s Nikhil Thampi outfit may have been perfect on paper (you should know that we are still lusting over Thampi’s LFW collection), but it did not translate as well as Chopra and her stylist would have hoped. And then there was Kalki. There are many looks that this hipster actress can work, but her Gaurav Gupta ensemble was not one of them. We have to say that its overwhelming silhouette left us pretty underwhelmed!

So, while we spotted our fair share of ‘yays’ and ‘nays’, we couldn’t help but notice that the styling, in general, was safe and sometimes bordering on uninspiring this time. Award season fatigue, perhaps?
